F is for Freyja, Norse Goddess of Love, Sex and Beauty

220px-Freia_Gestures_to_Hyndla_by_FrølichYou can also add fertility, gold, war and death. She rides a chariot pulled by two cats, wears an enchanted necklace made of amber and rubies (called the necklace of desire ior Brisingamen) that makes her irresistible to men, and a cloak made of falcon feathers. Her pet boar is often at her side.

She’s quite stately looking, if you ask me.

Freyja appears in thirteen century writings, but is believed to date much further back in Norse tales. She assists in matters of love and fertility and is also a Valkyrie who pulls half of the slain warriors from the battlefield and takes them to a heavenly-afterlife called Folkvangr. Their loved ones are invited to join them.

Three Interesting Facts about Freyja:

  1. The word Friday is thought to have derived from her name (and her twin brother’s, Fryr)
  2. Her legendary, unbridled sexuality is considered more excessive than the Greek Goddess, Aphrodite.
  3. With strawberry-blond hair and Viking-blue eyes, she was considered irresistible to men. She wore a magical necklace (which she got by sleeping with four dwarfs during a storm).
  4. According to rumors she was also a shape-shifter.

Why Freyja?

That is, why did I choose her? Why not? I think she’s a fascinating character.

Author: Jo-Ann Carson

About Jo-Ann Carson Where magic happens … Reports of Jo-Ann Carson’s death on a Gulf Island are greatly exaggerated or, at the very least, premature. The eclectic crew of ghosts that haunt her head spill onto the page in two series: The Gambling Ghosts and The Ghost & Abby Mysteries. A Viking with existential issues, a broken hearted Highlander, a Casanova man-witch and a Pirate with a secret are just a few of the males her strong heroines encounter in tales of fantasy, adventure and romance. A firm believer in the magic of our everyday lives, Jo-Ann loves watching sunrises, walking beaches near her home in the Pacific Northwest and reading by the fire. 1. Oh, Jo-Ann I did jumping up and downs and claps when I saw yours today! My niece is Freyja! That is what her dad named her!!! He father is not my blood but is my brother. He has been dead several years now. He was brutally murdered so when I saw this and the Norse mythology, in general, was a sign from the universe for me!!! So delighted you picked her!!!
