The author gives us the background story of Bakari Al Sharif, an arms dealer, and Desjerit, the sorceress. Bakari is in Amsterdam and it is 1996. He’s enjoying the thrill of pulling off a huge arms deal with Nigeria and is in the prime of his life. Meanwhile, Desjerit has a premonition she’s going to die a painful death. She’s frightened and in a desperation, she embraces the dark powers within her.
