This is a “From the Writing Loft” Friday post:
I embarked on a three day “free” promotion (as a part of the Amazon KDP program).
Tuesday May 12th – Day 1
Covert Danger went free on Amazon today. I’ve made a special post to announce this on my blog, and I’ve had the honor of being a guest on the blogs of Marsha R. West, Joanne Guidoccio, and JC McKenzie. I’ve placed promotion information on Goodreads, Twitter and Facebook, and I’m featured on Fussy Librarian ($16.) and Choosy Bookworm ($12.).
Journaling my Experience:
It’s 9:15 a.m. (here on the west coast) and over 150 people have downloaded my book, Covert Danger. I’m vibrating with excitement. Over 150 people! Already!
My eyes can’t leave the green line on the Kindle Report graph, which indicates the number of free downloads. It keeps growing.
People want to read my book. How many will like it? Will that beautiful green line keep going up? Breathe. Just breathe… I go for coffee.
9:32 am— Over 200 now. OM gosh! OM gosh! OM gosh! How can I possibly do any writing today?
10:55— Over 300 and ranked #935 in the Kindle Free store. No one told me it would be this much fun.
1:00 pm-– 500 sold, ranking 698 (OMG) I start emailing and texting random people who know me by name. I can’t contain my excitement. Never in my wildest dreams…
3:30 — 700+ They change the graph to accommodate the growing green line. I’m looking every five minutes. Well, okay… maybe it’s more like two, every two minutes.
5:00 — 800+ and I’m ranked 249 on the Kindle free list. Forget prepping dinner. We can eat potato chips. I have to watch the line. It keeps moving. PJ comes home. I ask him to guess how many readers have downloaded my book. He guesses 37:) I laugh.
9:00 –1,095 downloads, #177 on the free list. I broke 1K!!! I can barely breathe. Time to celebrate. I drive out and buy an ice-cream cake from Dairy Queen. I have to do something and the liquor stores are closed. 1K… 1K!!!!
midnight –1,191 downloads Phew. This is a day I will always remember
Wednesday May 13th – Day 2
My promotion is still featured on my blog, and Marsha R West’s and JC McKenzie’s blogs. In addition it’s featured on Jacquie Biggar’s blog. I could never do this without the support of good friends and family.
What should I expect today? I haven’t paid for any advertising. Over 1K wonderful readers have already downloaded it. I inhale deeply, or at least try to. My chest is so tight with excitement that not much air gets in. Has anyone ever died of excitement? What a way to go… I watch the green line.
7:09 am— 142 downloaded, ranking 147 on the Kindle free list (.com site). This is more downloads than yesterday for this time of the day and the best ranking I’ve achieved so far. Breaking the top 100 is my new goal.
3:00 — 300+
midnight –424 Wowsers!
My grand total is 1,615!!! Over 1.5K. What a wild ride.
An advertising company contacts me and asks if I want more promotion. Other people are watching my green line. I don’t respond to their email. I’ve already gained more exposure than I ever dreamed possible. I’m ready to sit back and see what happens. And eat the ice cream cake that tastes like stale, frozen mud, but I don’t care, because I tell myself it’s the taste of success.
I dream. Wouldn’t it be nice if some day the green line turned red (indicating sales).
Thursday May 14th – Day 3
8:30– 37 downloads, ranking #328 on the Kindle Free list
Midnight — final report — 151 downloads and a ranking of #586
Total downloads = 1,766
I’ve been running on coffee and excitement for three days. Right now, to be honest, I don’t care what the average download is for books going free, or any brain-numbing number stuff. I’m ecstatic at how well my first book did. I imagine people, many people, reading it. After years of working on my writing, I can’t tell you how nice it is. It’s like winning the best lottery in the world.
And that’s Friday’s news from my writing loft.
